The brief

BALWIK, a new community news magazine in Quezon province, needed a look for its monthly issues, starting with Volume 1, Number 1 in September 2021.

What I did

As Layout Artist I designed the covers and inside pages of each issue: cover stories, features, interviews, editorials and opinion columns.

Design decisions

  • Every cover is built around one strong portrait and a short cover line, so the magazine is recognisable from issue to issue.
  • A consistent grid and colour-coded section heads help readers move between news, features and opinion.
  • Large pull-quote titles give long reads a strong way in, in both English and Filipino.
